Woman honored for Iraq gift drive

KIRKLAND -- Ruth Ann Young was honored yesterday with an "Everyday Hero Award" for coordinating a Christmas drive of 6,000 gift packages for U.S. military personnel in Iraq.

The Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International gave her the award at a lunch in Kirkland.

After her Christmas store was closed because of damage from a nearby fire, the Kirkland woman decided to use the space to help U.S. military personnel in Iraq by preparing gift packages, which included reading material, letters from schoolchildren, beef jerky, lip balm and eye drops. Cash donations and materials totaled $200,000.

"She selflessly did this. It was an exciting project," said Bill Meany, Kirkland Kiwanis Club spokesman.
