3 major unions endorse Gregoire
OLYMPIA -- Three unions representing 144,000 workers endorsed Attorney General Christine Gregoire's bid for governor yesterday.
The endorsements by the Federation of State Employees, the Service Employees International Union and the Machinists come unusually early and solidify Gregoire's status as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.
"It would be a shame if the three Democratic candidates bloodied each other to the point where they were less able to compete in the November election," said David Rolf, president of the SEIU's Local 775, which represents home-care and nursing-home workers. "We've got to keep our eyes on the prize."
Gregoire faces a potentially bruising three-way primary battle against King County Executive Ron Sims and former state Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge. If she wins, she will take on former state Sen. Dino Rossi, who's unopposed on the Republican side.
"This is a great day, and it means a great deal to me," Gregoire said. "Each and every one of these unions represents thousands of working men and women. This will put huge momentum behind our campaign."
