TACOMA -- A 54-year-old Seattle man died Saturday in a boating accident on American Lake, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said.

Detective Ed Troyer said the man, whose identity was not immediately released, was on a test run in an 18-foot hydroplane going about 100 mph when it went out of control and flipped about 11:20 a.m.. The man was ejected.

A rescue boat that was following the hydroplane took the victim to shore, where medics tried to save him, but he died at the scene, Troyer said.

The boat sank, he said, and it will be up to the boat's owners to recover it.

Hydroplane test runs are allowed on American Lake at specified times, Troyer said.
