Fire caused by lightning spreads to 900 acres
LEAVENWORTH -- Lightning sparked a wildfire yesterday afternoon about nine miles west of here and the blaze had covered about 900 acres by midevening, a Forest Service spokeswoman said.
The smoky fire was burning in the Icicle Creek drainage of the Washington Cascades.
No structures were threatened, but Chelan County sheriff's officers were contacting people in campgrounds, advising them of the fire and giving them an opportunity to leave, Forest Service spokeswoman Robin DeMario said.
The fire started at an elevation of 5,000 to 6,000 feet and was slowly moving downhill, burning through fir and pine trees, brush and grass, she said.
