Man struck by van while changing tire; legs amputated

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENTON -- A man had both legs amputated yesterday after he was struck by a van on an off-ramp of Interstate 405 while he was changing a tire on his car. State troopers were searching for the van's driver.

Byron Speer, 24, was in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center last night, a nursing supervisor said.

The State Patrol said Speer was struck when a van reportedly drifted onto the shoulder of the road as he was fixing a flat tire along the off-ramp of northbound Interstate 405 at state Route 167.

Sgt. Donald Cyprain told reporters the van blew a tire and came to rest farther down the road. During questioning, the van's driver collapsed and was taken to nearby Valley Medical Center, Cyprain said. He later left without talking to troopers.

"We need to question him. We need to bring closure to this incident. So, if he's out there, I hope he returns," Cyprain said.

Authorities initially identifed the van driver as a Tacoma man, but KOMO-TV reported this morning that the man gave a false identity.
