Users of BuSpar drug will get hefty refund

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Consumers who requested refunds from being overcharged for the anti-anxiety drug called BuSpar will get an average of $800 in the mail this week.

A settlement made last year between 38 states and Bristol-Myers Squibb, the makers of BuSpar, came after states attorneys general accused the pharmaceutical company of maneuvering to keep a less expensive generic version of BuSpar off the market.

States experts estimated that the price of BuSpar went from about $62 to about $17 for a 100-pill supply after the generic finally hit the market.

Washington consumers will receive nearly $1 million, while state agencies and Medicaid will get $2.1 million.
