Two men trying to help create bomb scare
ISSAQUAH -- Two target shooters out for an afternoon of practice east of North Bend on Sunday flirted with tragedy when they discovered what they thought might be a pipe bomb and, trying to be helpful, delivered it by car to the Issaquah police station on East Sunset Way about 20 miles away.
The delivery threw a scare into local police, who closed the street and called the King County Sheriff's Office bomb squad.
The device was real, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart said yesterday.
The pipe, about 7 inches long and enclosed with screw caps on both ends, was found by the two shooters just off Interstate 90 near Exit 38.
It had what appeared to be a fuse sticking out of one end and, Urquhart confirmed, it was later found to contain black power, "which by definition is very unstable and extremely dangerous," he said.
Issaquah spokesman Sgt. Scott Behrbaum said the two shooters appeared to be in their late 20s or early 30s, and did what they did "because they didn't want somebody else coming upon it, especially kids."
However, both Behrbaum and Urquhart said the two men should have left the device where they found it and called police.
"One of the worst things you can do with something like that is to move it," Urquhart said.
