Honorable discharge granted to Army chaplain
Nearly a year to the day after Army Capt. James Yee was arrested for suspected espionage on charges that were eventually discredited and dropped, he has learned he will be granted an honorable discharge.
Yee, an Army chaplain, had been accused of espionage while serving Muslim prisoners from Iraq and Afghanistan detained at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Cuba. Yee's lawyer, Eugene Fidell of Washington, D.C., yesterday said the Army Human Resources Command accepted Yee's resignation from the service Monday.
Yee, who is still based at Fort Lewis, will continue to serve at the post near Tacoma until his separation from the Army next January. The Army's handling of Yee's case will be scrutinized this fall by the Defense Department's inspector-general.
