Statement on racetrack due Monday

EVERETT -- Snohomish County authorities confirmed yesterday that an announcement is expected Monday on a preferred location for a NASCAR speedway, fueling speculation that Marysville will be a contender.

County Executive Aaron Reardon said he was informed yesterday that representatives from the International Speedway Corp., which is interested in building an 80,000-seat racetrack in the Northwest, will reveal the fate of the Marysville site.

Snohomish County had been competing with Kitsap County to lure the speedway to Washington. The company also has visited sites in Oregon.

"I do feel confident ... but it's not a foregone conclusion," Reardon said, who added the county would begin a more in-depth investigation into whether playing host to the speedway makes sense financially and for the overall community.
