Murray gets more money for mine site
Glacier Northwest still has its eye on mining the gravel in its 300-acre Maury Island mine.
But Sen. Patty Murray yesterday came up with another $2 million in federal funds to save the mine site as public land. The total amount of federal money now set aside for purchasing the mile-long strip of Puget Sound shoreline amounts to $4 million -- far short of the $50 million Glacier says it's worth.
Murray's office made the announcement yesterday through the offices of King County Council members Dow Constantine and Larry Phillips.
Glacier general manager Ron Summers, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, said Monday he is awaiting word from the state Shorelines Hearings Board on his appeal of a King County decision denying him a permit to mine the property.
Glacier, formerly Lone Star, has long argued that the property, already zoned for mining, should get the permits.
King County says the anticipated amount of gravel to be mined and the method of transporting it from the site -- on barges from the shoreline -- require special permits that it is not willing to give.
Glacier, which is owned by a Japanese conglomerate, wants to mine up to 7.5 million tons of gravel a year from the site and do so around the clock if necessary.
With plenty of building projects eager to obtain gravel from such a close-in site, a prime customer could be the Port of Seattle's third runway project at SeaTac Airport, just across Puget Sound from Maury Island.
