Suit filed to save San Juan Island butterfly
A San Juan Island butterfly is at risk of disappearing, environmentalists say, so they filed a lawsuit in federal court yesterday to try to force the government to save it.
Fewer than 200 of the green-and-white insects -- the Island marble butterfly -- are known to exist and all live within the grounds of American Camp, part of a national historic park on San Juan Island.
The butterfly hadn't been seen for 90 years when it was rediscovered at the park in 1998.
Its disappearance is largely attributed to intensive grazing of sheep, which destroyed plants needed for its survival.
The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the San Juans filed a petition in December 2002 seeking protection of the butterflies under the Endangered Species Act, but the government failed to take action, members of the groups said.
