Dogs to sniff out cars at ferry terminals

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The State Patrol now says it will not have to conduct random searches of cars at state ferry terminals, thanks to dogs.

Capt. Fred Fakkema said the patrol has borrowed enough bomb-sniffing dogs from other police agencies. He said that will meet today's Coast Guard deadline for increased security.

Without sufficient dogs, troopers would have conducted random searches.

Fakkema said the patrol expects to graduate enough dogs from its academy in Shelton by next month to allow the borrowed dogs to go home.

The Coast Guard is requiring increased ferry screening as part of a national increase in security.

The number of dogs and exact number of cars that must be screened are being kept secret.
