Defender Association turns 35
It began with a few lawyers in 1969 and has become the largest criminal law firm in the state, with 88 attorneys defending roughly 11,000 people accused of crimes every year.
The Defender Association, the oldest and biggest of King County's four public-defense agencies, is celebrating its 35th anniversary today.
The agency helped found TeamChild, an award-winning program that gives children legal help with everything from getting past a school expulsion to finding a safe place to live when there are serious problems at home.
It's also home to the Death Penalty Information Center, where lawyers across the state turn for help in defending people who face the prospect of execution.
The association's lawyers defend children and adults accused of crimes ranging from criminal traffic offenses to slayings.
Its Racial Disparity Project is aimed at making things more equal when it comes to enforcing drug and truancy laws.
Its social workers look for alternatives to jail time for those who need mental health or drug abuse treatment, and its investigators look into almost 2,000 cases each year, sometimes uncovering evidence that leads to criminal charges being dropped, according to Robert Boruchowitz, who has been the association's director for 26 years.
