Government gives city West Point Lighthouse

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

The city is now the proud owner of a lighthouse.

The U.S. Interior Department has awarded the 122-year-old West Point Lighthouse west of Discovery Park to Seattle.

As part of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, the federal government offered to transfer ownership of its lighthouses to government or non-profit community groups.

Seven private and public non-profit groups, including the city, vied for ownership of the Seattle lighthouse.

The deal includes two houses, a maintenance building and 2.5 acres of waterfront property.

The lighthouse needs some structural and roof work. Eventually, the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department plans to open the building to the public for about 600 hours per year for environmental education and tours.

Last year, the City Council approved setting aside $600,000 in the Shoreline Park Improvement Fund for the lighthouse. The $25 million fund was given to the city as mitigation by King County resulting from the expansion of the sewage treatment plant at West Point.
