Petition aims at property rules
At a Renton feed store yesterday, rural residents announced a signature drive to put King County rules limiting land clearing and development near streams, wetlands and shorelines before a vote of unincorporated residents.
Next Monday and Tuesday nights, volunteers will begin collecting the 12,000 signatures the Citizens Alliance for Property Rights estimates will be necessary to force a referendum on the county's critical areas ordinance.
Supporters of the regulations to preserve healthy watersheds and prevent flooding are likely to challenge the referendum effort.
The list of places where signatures will be collected will be posted on www.proprights.org. Only registered voters who would be affected by the rules enacted last month are eligible to sign petitions seeking to put the ordinances on the March 2004 ballot.
