Wayward seabird departing Seattle
Found on the street, it may have hitched ride aboard ship

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

It must have been a doozy of a trip that left a Laysan albatross roaming the streets of Seattle.

When the wayward seabird was discovered on First Avenue South, it was skinny with scraped-up feet. The creature's normally sleek white-and-charcoal feathers were waterlogged.

The albatross should have been out in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere in the vicinity of Hawaii or Midway Atoll this time of year. Experts suspect that it hopped a ride aboard a ship or barge -- possibly mistaking the vessel for an island -- only to wind up in the Emerald City.

Corrie Hines, a wildlife rehabilitator for PAWS in Lynnwood , spends some time yesterday with a Laysan albatross, which was found in downtown Seattle.

The bird was rushed in to the Progressive Animal Welfare Society shelter in Lynnwood on April 11 for care, and today is being flown to another recovery center in Northern California.

"They will do further rehabilitative care with bigger and better pools," said Jennifer Convy, wildlife rehabilitation manager for PAWS.

Alaska Airlines is covering the cost of flying the bird to Sacramento. From there, it will be under the care of the International Bird Rescue Research Center, a non-profit group.

"We were kind of surprised to hear that we had an albatross coming from Washington," said Karen Benzel, a spokeswoman for the center.

The birds turn up about once a year in California, she said.

After the bird is returned to health, it will be shipped out to sea and released.

With wings that span more than 6 feet, the birds can glide on air currents for weeks. Nocturnal diners, the birds consume fish and squid.

"They're such amazing birds," Benzel said. "They're absolutely gorgeous."
