Seattle ready to spend $1 million on streets
The Seattle City Council yesterday set aside $1 million to work on the backlog of street maintenance and earmarked funds for a traffic light at a Crown Hill intersection where a 12-year-old boy was struck by a car and critically injured.
In addition to the planned traffic light at Northwest 87th Street and 15th Avenue Northwest, the council also set aside $500,000 for lights at other intersections throughout the city.
Earlier this year, neighbors in Crown Hill demanded that city officials put a traffic light where 12-year-old Nick Messenger was struck by a car in late February.
"Our goal must be zero tolerance for ... drivers who violate pedestrian space," Councilman Richard Conlin said. "Everyone in Seattle should be able to walk safely in their own community. New traffic signals and cameras are a major step toward that goal."
The extra money comes from a bigger than expected increase in real estate excise tax revenue to the city.
The new revenue will be used to pay for a long list of items that were cut or couldn't be included in the 2005 budget adopted by the council last fall.
Among the money set aside yesterday, $100,000 will go toward lighting in Pioneer Square and $300,000 toward restoring the Mount Baker Boathouse.
