P-I wins 39 SPJ awards for excellence in journalism
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer received 39 awards from the regional Society of Professional Journalists, including best overall Web site, at the 2005 Excellence in Journalism dinner during the weekend.
The SPJ Pacific Northwest Chapter, covering Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, awarded the P-I 12 first places, 11 seconds, 10 thirds and six honorable mentions in a variety of categories.
"We appreciate it when our professional colleagues recognize excellence in our work," said Ken Bunting, executive editor of the P-I.
Oren Campbell, publisher and editorial adviser of the University of Washington student newspaper, The Daily, won the June Anderson Almquist award for Distinguished Service to Journalism. Roger Simpson, associate professor who directs trauma training at the UW's communications school, won the Susan Hutchison Bosch award for Outstanding Achievement.
The SPJ awarded The Seattle Times the Sweepstakes Award for the most prizes (60) among large newspapers. In the non-daily newspaper and alternative newsweekly categories, The Seattle Weekly won 53 awards and The Stranger won one.
Among all newspapers of any size, the P-I's David Horsey won a first place and an honorable mention in editorial cartoons, and P-I illustrators David Badders and Guillermo Munro won first and third place, respectively, in illustrations.
