U.S. mayors support Nickels' climate plan
Mayor Greg Nickels won unanimous support yesterday for his proposed climate protection agreement at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Chicago. Nickels challenged cities nationwide to meet or beat the 7 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions called for in the Kyoto Protocol.
In February, more than 100 countries signed the agreement, but the United States wasn't among them. Nickels called for a city-by-city effort to implement the climate-protection measures.
"Mayors across America are making it clear: We're not going to wait for the federal government to do something to prevent the production of greenhouse gases. We're going to step up and provide the leadership at the local level, city by city."
Before the Chicago meeting, 164 cities had signed the agreement proposed by Nickels.
