Candidate pulls out of School Board race
There is one fewer candidate running for the Seattle School Board, after attorney David von Beck announced his withdrawal yesterday.
In a humorous e-mail sent to reporters and friends, von Beck -- a partner in Seattle law firm Levy -- von Beck & Associates -- said he'd declared his candidacy last week for Jan Kumasaka's open District 7 seat in South Seattle at the urging of friends and neighbors.
The father of two Seattle Public Schools students, von Beck, whose wife is a fourth-grade teacher at McGilvra Elementary, said he has closely monitored the goings-on of the troubled school district and as a parent, attorney, former writing teacher and "usually likable guy," felt he had something to contribute.
"As it turns out, I feel there are two candidates who are better qualified, better funded, and probably better dressed, than I am," von Beck wrote. "Of course, I'm tempted to say that I'm leaving politics to spend more time with my family. Unfortunately, I've only been in the race for five days and I'm quite sure my family hasn't missed me in the least."
His withdrawal leaves four candidates vying for Kumasaka's seat in the September primary. Candidates have until tomorrow to withdraw.
