Relax: That's no overturned boat -- it's art
Surprised commuters crossing the Evergreen Point Bridge yesterday spotted three bedraggled "castaways" on a small island -- complete with palm tree -- floating in Lake Washington.
"The Island" was performance art meant to honor the waning days of summer.
Some motorists, however, thought the structure was an overturned boat and called police and fire departments. Rescuers responded to a call at noon Monday and mustered at the University of Washington.
Harbor Patrol made at least three stops by the floating art and determined everything was fine and that the installation met requirements.
The quirky island brought smiles from the responding officers.
Artists John Sutton, Ben Beres and Zac Culler launched their creation into Lake Washington Sunday afternoon and slept there overnight. They plan to stay on the manmade and faintly cartoonist island indefinitely.
Floating a couple hundreds north of SR 520, it's 20 feet in diameter with a 12-foot palm tree.
The three artists recently won a "genius" award from The Stranger. See related story for more information.
