Man charged with vehicular assault

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

King County prosecutors have charged a Redmond man who said he may have been under the influence of several drugs when he allegedly drove into a group of bicyclists, then fled.

Steven Riedel, 58, was charged with vehicular assault and felony hit-and-run in the crash Sunday morning on Willows Road in Redmond.

According to witnesses, Riedel's car was weaving as it approached a group of bicyclists riding in the southbound bike lane. The car drifted across the centerline and into their path. He struck one of them, Gail Alef, 54, who was trapped under the car and was dragged several feet.

Alef suffered pelvic fractures, internal bleeding and spinal and rib fractures, according to prosecutors.

A nursing supervisor at Harborview Medical Center said Wednesday afternoon that she was in critical condition.

Afterward, witnesses said, Riedel fled on foot. He was found on a nearby golf course.
