Stanford School wins award and $10,000

SEATTLE -- John Stanford International School has been named one of 20 recipients nationwide of a 2005 "School of Distinction" award and a $10,000 cash grant from Scholastic and Intel.

More than 3,000 schools competed for the annual awards, which recognize educational innovation.

The school was recognized for its partnerships with the University of Washington; a sister-school project with schools in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Tanzania; and an international business breakfast that connects the school with the local business community.

Pest control without chemicals stressed

SEATTLE -- Seattle Public Schools has revised its pest-management policy to emphasize non-chemical methods of pest control and provide more notice to the community when pesticides are used.

The School Board voted Sept. 21 to modify the existing policy at the recommendation of a community advisory group that advocated for the changes.

State law requires all school districts to routinely notify the community about pesticide use near schools. But under the new policy, the district will provide more information to the community on pesticide use within the district and pest-management practices and policy.

The new policy will emphasize non-chemical methods of pest control and prevention, but acknowledges that some pesticides likely will still be used. The policy includes criteria to evaluate the health and environmental effect of pesticides that may be used, and encourages use of only the least-toxic pesticides.

The community advisory committee was formed last November and included district staff members, parents, pest-management experts and health and environmental non-profit representatives.

An ongoing integrated pest-management committee will monitor implementation of the policy.
