FBI arrests suspected eco-terrorists

By PAUL SHUKOVSKY
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

In a series of coordinated raids around the nation Wednesday, federal agents arrested six suspected eco-terrorists for arsons at four locations and the destruction of an electric transmission tower in the Northwest.

The arrests could mean a break in the investigation of the May 21, 2001, firebombing of the University of Washington’s Urban Horticulture Center.

Two of those arrested are accused of an arson attack on the Jefferson Poplar Farms in Clatskanie, Ore., which occurred at the same time as the firebombing at UW. The arsonists who set the UW blaze used incendiary devices nearly identical to those used by those who torched the Oregon tree farm, according to federal criminal justice sources.

The word "ELF" was emblazoned at the site of the Oregon fire, indicating that people who ally themselves with the Earth Liberation Front group were responsible for the fires.

Charged in the tree farm fire are Stanislas Meyerhoff, 28, of Charlottesville, Va., and Daniel McGowan, 31, who was arrested in New York City.

Agents also arrested two men for an arson fire at a federal laboratory in Olympia in June 21, 1998. Charged in that case is Kevin Tubbs, 36, who was arrested in Springfield, Oregon and William Rodgers, 40, who was arrested in Prescott, Ariz.
