Port, cargo company sign up for biodiesel
A deal to use 1 million gallons of biodiesel a year announced Thursday by the Port of Seattle and SSA Marine, a cargo company, is being touted as the first venture of its kind nationally.
It will be the highest concentration of biodiesel used at a single U.S. location. Its source will be Washington producers.
"This agreement shows that the Northwest continues to lead the way on reducing our nation's overdependence on fossil fuels," Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said in a statement.
Seattle Biodiesel, the region's largest producer of plant-derived biodiesel, also announced Thursday a plan to expand production of its 5 million-gallon-a-year facility to help meet increasing demand.
SSA Marine plans to use biodiesel mixed with regular diesel for dockside loading and container equipment. The port will use the more environmentally friendly fuel in service vehicles.
Since fall 2004, Cantwell has been working to develop the state's biodiesel fuel industry. The national energy bill approved in August included a measure she supported to fund the development of more "biofuels" created from wheat straw, oil seed crops, agricultural waste and other plant materials.
