Renton man charged with threats to Bush

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

A Renton man faces three federal felony charges accusing him of making threats against President Bush.

A U.S. magistrate ordered Steven Baldwin held on charges of making a false threat using biological weapons, making a false threat using explosive materials and threats against the president.

Baldwin will be held pending a detention hearing Wednesday.

Baldwin is accused of mailing a package to Bush at the White House last July 20 on which he had written "Biological Weapons Enclosed."

Baldwin is accused of sending another package that day to Bush on which he wrote the words "Letter Bomb!" He signed his name to the rambling, five-page letter inside.

And he is accused of mailing another package Dec. 14 containing a cell phone wrapped in wires. On the package, Baldwin is charged with writing, "Brace For Impact, I've Read Your Fortune & The Signs Are Not In Your Favor."

Baldwin told a Secret Service agent that he has suicidal thoughts, according to court documents. He said it would be amusing to drive to the White House, make threatening statements and "then have his head blown off by the Secret Service."
