Kalakala seeks its place in history
HOQUIAM -- A state historic panel is nominating the long-retired art-deco-style ferry Kalakala for the National Register of Historic Places -- a bit of a stretch since the vessel has no fixed location.
The panel voted to nominate the Kalakala to the national register.
The National Park Service will make the final call.
The Kalakala, which ran between Seattle and Bremerton from the 1930s to the 1960s, has been on the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma for more than a year.
Its current owner, Steve Rodrigues, applied for the historic listing.
Rodrigues, who bought the vessel at a 2003 auction for more than $136,000, hopes to see it become a restaurant and wedding venue.
He estimated restoration costs at more than $15 million -- a problem for its admirers since the vessel was towed from Alaska in 1998.
