City to repair monorail
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels said today that the city plans to repair the disabled Seattle Center Monorail trains and restart service this summer at a cost of $3 million to $4 million.
Safety devices would be installed to prevent another accident at the site where two trains collided on a curve above Olive Way on Nov. 26. The trains have been idled since then.
The trains are owned by the city and carry more than 2 million passengers annually between the Seattle Center and Westlake Center downtown.
The monorail is an integral part of the Seattle Center, which is in financial difficulty and not supporting itself. Loss of the trains hurt several merchants along the line, particularly during the Christmas shopping season.
The collision occurred on a stretch of track that was narrowed to make room for the mall and to reduce the monorail's shadow on the street below.
