Committee working on 'critical areas' rules
A City Council committee Thursday came close to agreeing on updated rules to protect Seattle's ecologically fragile areas, but tabled a decision on requiring some developers to uncover piped creeks.
The state-mandated update of the "critical areas" rules would generally expand development-free buffers around streams and valuable wetlands and rein in some exemptions that homeowners have enjoyed.
The City Council committee approved a change preventing anyone from building a home within 25 feet of a marine shoreline.
Currently, homeowners can build up to the water's edge if nearby neighbors already have.
