Ruby sold to raise money benefits all
A ruby necklace given to the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle several weeks ago has helped the homeless and given an injured Auburn man a way to show his appreciation for his wife of 41 years.
The necklace was given to the mission by an anonymous donor. Mission officials, who decided to raise needed funds with the piece, set a price of $1,000 and sold the necklace to Bill Bratton.
The money was earmarked for the mission's work of helping the homeless.
Bratton recently suffered an industrial accident, according to his wife, Vicki Bratton. His mother has had a series of strokes, and the family had run into some tough times financially, she said.
"He's down and he thinks I am, and he wanted to buy it for me for our anniversary," Vicki Britton said. "He thought that I should have it, and he needed to give it."
The couple met at a friend's home on Queen Anne in 1964 and married the day before Valentine's Day the following year.
