Summer Nights concert series canceled

By KATHY MULADY
P-I REPORTER

In the wake of citizen complaints, One Reel has canceled the Summer Nights concert series that was scheduled to take place at Gas Works Park this year. The non-profit group said it will work with the city of Seattle and other agencies to revive the series at Gas Works Park in 2007.

A neighborhood group had filed a lawsuit to halt the series in the community park until an environmental impact study is done.

“I know a lot of people will be disappointed not to have this high-quality and much-loved series in Seattle this year,” said Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ken Bounds. “But we plan to address all of the issues and impacts thoroughly over the next several months with the broad community and to see the series back next year.”

A statement from the parks department said the timeline to produce the concert series was stymied by efforts of Friends of Gas Works Park, which filed the lawsuit.

Beginning in 1991, the concert series was held at Pier 62-63 on the waterfront. It was moved to South Lake Union Park last year when it was determined that the pier had deteriorated too much to support the weight of the event.

Because of construction on South Lake Union Park, the parks department hastily suggested moving the concerts to Gas Works this year. Citizens complained that the summerlong event was moved without allowing community comment, or with a study of the environmental impacts.
