City's controversial land-use vote on hold
A decision as to whether piped Seattle streams will see the light of day and other protections for ecologically sensitive areas was postponed for two weeks Monday by the City Council.
The council was slated to vote on an update of controversial land-use rules that dictate how development happens on shorelines, wetlands, steep slopes and wildlife areas.
Council members raised questions about a proposed amendment to the rules that would allow officials to require landowners to uncover creeks buried in pipes in cases where the benefit justified the expense. Members wanted more time to resolve questions about the amendment, council staff said.
Environmentalists have pushed for stream-"daylighting" requirements and stronger shoreline protections, while some landowners and developers are fearful the rules will too strictly limit their property use, diminishing its value.
