1938-2006: Fast. First. Phil.
A tribute to 50 years with P-I photographer Phil H. Webber

P-I STAFF

He was a romantic soul who called every woman beautiful and counted every day at work as a vacation. He was Phil H. Webber, Seattle P-I photographer.

If you didn't know him, you probably saw him. He was hard to miss, decked out in a rainbow of colors, from his funky Italian socks to his custom-made tie-dye vests stuffed with camera gear and, in recent months, pills to combat a progressive lung disease.

P-I photographer Joshua Trujillo shot Webber on the roof of the newspaper's building in April 2005. Webber loved what he did and he loved doing it for the P-I.

He lost that battle a week ago at home. His memorial service is this afternoon at 2 at the Berean Bible Church, 2345 N. 185th St. in Shoreline. His two beloved beagles, Milo and Bagel, will have front-row seats.

Today, the P-I focuses on Webber with a four-page tribute honoring his 50-year career. His photos and his last interview offer a glimpse into the life of a shoot-and-scoot photographer who vowed to get the news fast, get it first and do it in style.
