Spokane neighborhood state's largest historic district
SPOKANE -- A former "streetcar suburb" near downtown Spokane has been named the state's largest National Historic District by the National Park Service, the city said Wednesday.
Nettleton's Addition, in Spokane's West Central neighborhood, was named for William Nettleton, whose work in Spokane and the Midwest promoted westward expansion by rail.
Nettleton's Addition catered to the housing needs of the emerging turn-of-the-century middle class, and 70 percent of the homes there were built before 1910.
It was added to the state heritage register last year.
Nettleton founded Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., in the 1850s. He donated 65 acres to secure the Northern Pacific Railroad eastern terminus in Duluth.
He moved to Spokane in 1883, the same year the Northern Pacific arrived in the city. Nettleton bought 260 acres from the Northern Pacific and platted the land for sale.
"This early Spokane streetcar suburb documents perfectly the life cycle of American cities," according to the city's Web site.
