Allied Waste, drivers resume talks
Deal with Waste Management heads off strike
Garbage-truck drivers in King County will resume contract negotiations with one of their employers by this morning in an effort to avoid a strike, a spokesman for the company, Allied Waste, said Monday.
The county's other garbage hauler, Waste Management, reached a tentative agreement with its drivers after a night of bargaining, that company announced early Monday. The deal headed off a strike threatened for Monday.
Together, the two companies employ 600 drivers responsible for curbside pickup of garbage in most of King and parts of Snohomish counties.
The drivers, represented by Teamsters Local 174 in Seattle, have been working under a contract that expired March 31.
Tentative agreements negotiated April 2 with both companies were rejected Saturday by the union's members. The Teamsters resumed talks with Waste Management over the weekend, but were unable to meet with Allied Waste.
A Teamsters spokesman was not available for comment Monday.
A Waste Management spokesman said he did not know when the union members would vote on the latest contract proposal.
