16 teachers, others to get laid off in Seattle
School Board takes action to balance budget

By JESSICA BLANCHARD
P-I REPORTER

Seattle Public Schools plans to notify 16 teachers and other school employees this week that they will be laid off at the end of the school year.

An additional 156 school employees have been displaced, meaning they will go into a pool of employees waiting for reassignment around the district.

The job cuts are part of $15 million in reductions that will be necessary to balance the district's budget for the next school year.

The layoffs will affect six vocational-education teachers, four music teachers, three art teachers and a foreign-language teacher. A guidance specialist and a drug- and alcohol-intervention specialist also will be laid off.

The School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize the superintendent to lay off as many certificated staff members as necessary to help balance next year's budget. The move gives the district time to notify affected teachers by May 15, as required under state law.

The Seattle School District, the largest in the state, employs 4,316 certificated employees, 3,105 of them teachers.

There is a chance some laid-off employees could return next fall, depending on the number of retirements or leaves of absence.

Last year, the district laid off 23 teachers and more than 170 other school employees..
