Fishermen find body floating in water

P-I STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

PORT TOWNSEND -- A man who was said to have leukemia has been found dead in the water in Port Ludlow with a kayak floating nearby, Jefferson County sheriff's deputies said.

Two men in a motorboat were on their way to go fishing Tuesday morning when they discovered Thomas E. Cone, 60, of Vancouver, Wash., floating in the water, sheriff's Sgt. Michael R. Stringer said.

They took Cone and a 17-foot red kayak that was floating nearby to shore, where he was pronounced dead by an emergency medical crew.

Friends in the area whom Cone had been visiting told the deputies he had leukemia but was a very strong kayaker. They suggested that he must have experienced a medical problem on the water, Prosecutor and coroner Juelie Dalzell said.

There were no signs of foul play, and an autopsy was pending, Dalzell said.
