Nickels outlines green agenda
His previous environmental work continues
Riding his wave of ecological good deeds, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels on Thursday announced his environmental agenda for this year and next.
The list largely continues environment-oriented projects already in the works and enumerates recent accomplishments. They include signing up 250 mayors for his municipal version of the climate-protecting Kyoto Protocol and launching a project to restore city land that's become overgrown with tree-killing weeds.
Nickels is set to release two detailed strategies this fall, one for increasing the number of trees in the city and another specifying the actions needed to reduce the city's global warming impact.
In the past three decades, the amount of land covered by trees has shrunk from 40 percent to 18 percent, officials said.
Another agenda item is revising regulations to create incentives for people to capture rainwater falling on their property and use it for irrigation or allow it to slowly seep back into the ground. Rainwater streaming off roofs and driveways carries pollution into streams and into Puget Sound.
Also on the list is completing a master plan to improve bicycle paths and route connections, plus finishing the Chief Sealth Trail in Southeast Seattle.
The agenda did not include projected costs for the efforts.
