Murder-suicide shocks Pasco man's friends
KENNEWICK -- A man who police say killed his estranged wife and wounded her co-worker before killing himself was described as a reserved man who gave no indication that he was planning any kind of violent act.
Police say they believe Doug Britt, 39, of nearby Pasco, arrived at Dewey Mahoney's Kennewick apartment late Friday afternoon to confront his estranged wife, Julie, who was visiting Mahoney.
Doug Britt shot Mahoney several times on the patio outside the apartment, then shot his wife before turning the small-caliber handgun on himself, police said.
Britt and his 34-year-old wife died at the scene. Mahoney was taken to Kennewick General Hospital, where he was in serious condition Sunday, the hospital said.
"It seemed very much out of character," said Tim Fredrickson, manager of Ben Franklin Transit, where Doug Britt was an operations supervisor. "We thought enough of him to have him as a supervisor."
Art Pond, a friend of Doug Britt's, told the Tri-City Herald that he spoke with Britt about an hour before the shooting. "Everything seemed fine on the phone," Pond said.
The Britts' two children were said to be with relatives.
