Woman crushed to death by bus
Metro riders see fatal accident
A woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a Metro bus in downtown Seattle on Wednesday night, after being bumped into the road by a bicyclist, Seattle police officials said.
Police arrested a 53-year-old Seattle man, who authorities found nearby with a bicycle shortly after the accident. They booked the man into King County Jail Thursday morning for investigation of manslaughter.
The fatality occurred about 6:20 p.m. on the east side of Third Avenue, between Pine Street and Stewart Street.
A number of witnesses both on the bus and street saw the bicyclist bump the woman, who has been identified as 46-year-old Betty Jean Simon.
"(The) victim was standing or walking near the bus stop, and was possibly bumped by a bicycle rider," said police spokesman Rich Pruitt. "At that point, (the) victim fell off the curb underneath the (central) wheels of the moving bus. The bus was just pulling up to pick up passengers and crushed (the) victim to death instantly."
The driver of the Metro bus was questioned by police and released into the custody of Metro supervisors, Pruitt said.
Wednesday's incident isn't the first time a Metro bus was involved in a fatality accident this summer.
Stephanie Reynolds, 52, of Shoreline was killed June 1, run over by the rear wheels of a bus at Northwest Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue Northwest. Reynolds apparently slipped and fell under the vehicle.
