State to raise minimum wage
Hourly wage to reach $7.93
Washington's hourly minimum wage will rise to $7.93 starting Jan. 1, marking a 30-cent increase, the state Department of Labor and Industries announced today.
Each year, the minimum wage is recalculated because of Initiative 688, which voters approved in 1998. The state law calls for the hourly wage to be adjusted based on a federal consumer price index.
That index measures the average price change for a variety of goods and services, including food, shelter, medical care and transportation, the department said in a statement.
The department said 14- and 15-year-olds could be paid 85 percent of the adult minimum wage, which is currently $7.63 per hour.
More information about the state minimum wage can be found at www.wages.lni.wa.gov Employers and residents also can call 866-219-7321 for more information.
