Burglars steal frozen meat, computers from two food banks

By BRAD WONG
P-I REPORTER

Burglars hit two Seattle-area food banks this week, making off with about $4,000 worth of frozen meat and an estimated $2,000 worth of computer equipment.

The Tukwila Pantry reported that someone broke into its 200-square-foot freezer late Wednesday and early Thursday, taking about 40 crates of meat, including hamburger, London broil, sausage, hot dogs and bacon.

Each crate holds up to 60 pounds of meat, said Joe Tice, pantry director. But unless the burglar had a place to store the meat, he added, it probably has thawed and gone to waste.

"They probably think they had a big score," Tice said.

The stolen meat could have helped families in crisis for about three to four months. The food bank, at 3118 S. 140th St., serves families in Tukwila, SeaTac, Burien, Boulevard Park and Skyway.

A burglar stole computer equipment from the Auburn Food Bank on Wednesday, according to police. The suspect also vandalized the building and ruined much of the stored food by setting off fire extinguishers.

Police have a 15-year-old suspect in custody. Auburn residents and businesses also have pitched in to help the organization, at 930 18th Place N.E.

These burglaries bring to three the number of Seattle-area non-profit organizations hit this week. Between Sunday and Tuesday, someone broke into the storage area of St. Joseph's Baby Corner, a Seattle group that gives diapers, baby clothing, blankets and supplies to families in need.

In that case, the person made off with an estimated $6,000 worth of baby supplies. Dozens of area residents responded by donating diapers, baby items and cash to help the group, on First Hill.
