Teachers union will still support closures
The Seattle teachers union will continue to support school closures, its members decided this week. The Seattle Education Association's board of directors approved a resolution Oct. 9 that would have withdrawn their backing of the district's plan to close seven school buildings next fall. But the group's representative assembly voted 90-39 this week to continue to support school closures. Eight members abstained.
SEA President Wendy Kimball said there was a robust debate before the vote, but that the result, "to me, is an indication that our members understand the fiscal realities that are facing public education in the Seattle school district."
Seattle Public Schools spokesman Peter Daniels said the district is grateful for the union's support of closures. "When you see these dedicated and highly skilled teachers do support it, I hope that will give parents and the community the confidence to know that it is indeed the right thing to do," he said.
