Man sentenced for hitting bicyclist

P-I STAFF

A Redmond man was sentenced to almost two years in prison Friday for running down an Eastside dentist who had been riding her bicycle in the bike lane.

Steven Riedel, 59, pleaded guilty in October to vehicular-homicide and reckless-endangerment charges for the accident, which badly injured Gail Alef, 54, in September 2005. She died several weeks later of her injuries.

Riedel's car was weaving as it approached Alef and other bicyclists on Willows Road in Redmond, then drifted across the centerline and struck the woman, according to witnesses.

He got out of the car and left. Police found him on a nearby golf course.
