Gateses giving $83.5M to fight malaria

By BRAD WONG
P-I REPORTER

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced Monday it is giving $83.5 million in grants to fight malaria, which the Seattle-based organization says kills more than a million people each year.

The Monday morning announcement came days before foundation co-chair Melinda Gates is expected to give a speech at a White House summit on the disease.

"Every day, thousands of mothers watch helplessly as their children die from a disease that we have known how to prevent for decades," she said in a statement.

"The continuing toll of malaria is a moral outrage. We would not allow it here in the U.S., and we should not allow it anywhere."

Of the total amount, the foundation is giving $29 million to a malaria project, which is based at PATH in Seattle and is aimed at helping African countries fight the disease.

Another $29 million will be given to PATH's efforts to come up with a malaria vaccine candidate. PATH is a non-profit group that is helping to find solutions to poor health conditions worldwide.

The World Health Organization would receive $2.2 million for its efforts to fight malaria in infants. The Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics, which is based in Switzerland, would receive $9.8 million for malaria diagnostic tests.

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are hosting the Thursday summit where Gates is scheduled to speak. About 250 government leaders, researchers, health advocates and scientists are expected to attend.

Including the grants announced Monday, the Gates Foundation reports it has committed $765.8 million to stop malaria.
