Mom gives birth on Interstate 5

By BRAD WONG
P-I REPORTER

The birth certificate should list Interstate 5 near Northeast 175th Street as baby Ian's birthplace.

Jenny Miller, a 29-year-old Brier woman, gave birth to her second son in a Honda minivan shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, the Washington State Patrol reported.

She and her 31-year-old husband, Todd, were in the car pool lane on their way to Northwest Hospital when traffic slowed down.

Trooper Jeff Merrill said the father was driving the Honda southbound when he called 911 to say that his wife was pregnant, in labor and required help.

The mother, who was in the front passenger seat, told a dispatcher that her fourth baby was on the way. Her seat was reclined all the way back.

"She thought it was going to happen quickly," Merrill said, adding that she told the dispatcher that her contractions were increasing.

She was right.

As troopers and medics made their way to their location in Shoreline, the father, who is a registered nurse, pulled over to the left shoulder.

After two pushes from his mother, the dark-eyed Ian Miller entered the world, weighing in at 6 pounds 7 ounces. He measures 18 inches in length and sports lots of hair.

"It's rare, but it does happen," said Jeff Smith, a spokesman for the Washington State Department of Health.
