Human waste partly to blame for Oakland Bay problem

P-I STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

SHELTON -- Tests conducted for the Environmental Protection Agency show that human waste is partly to blame for fouling Oakland Bay, the source of more than a third of the nation's manila clam harvest. Part of the bay was closed to shellfish harvest last year, and another portion barely escaped closure.

The EPA employed a contractor who used high-tech waste tests to determine that some of the pollution is from human waste, and some is from animals that could include cows, sheep, goats, elk or deer.
