UW student leaders vote to expand conduct code
Student leaders at the University of Washington voted Tuesday night to expand the student conduct code to include some off-campus behaviors.
UW students who receive police citations for committing serious offenses and "quality of life" offenses -- such as noise violations and property damage in the neighborhood surrounding the campus -- could face sanctions by the university under a resolution approved by the student government, student body president Cullen White said.
The student conduct code has previously dealt with students only when they are on campus or involved in university activities.
The passage of the resolution comes after state Sen. Ed Murray told UW student leaders that he would submit legislation to expand the conduct code unless they addressed the issue. Neighbors have complained about the rowdy behavior of some UW students.
White plans to meet today with Murray and other legislators to discuss the issue. He said the resolution that the students passed Tuesday was an appropriate step toward resolving the issues in the neighborhood north of campus.
