Open casting call Tuesday for local film

By AMY ROLPH
P-I REPORTER

Don't be surprised if Seattle's Capitol Hill seems a little more glamorous starting this Friday.

You can chalk that up to the movie crew camped out on Denny Way.

Capitol Hill's First Church of Christ Scientist will be the on-location spot for an independent film slated for theater release in 2008 -- local director Garrett Bennett's "The Spy & the Sparrow."

Crews will be filming in Seattle until March 15, and an open casting call for extras will he held Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the church, 1519 E. Denny Way.

The church was scheduled for a renovation, but owners Joel Lavin and Joe Sacotte delayed construction because of the film's production schedule.

According to the film's publicists, "The Spy and the Sparrow" is "a compelling, dramatic thriller about the deep devotion and repressed love that reunites a father and daughter after over two decades of separation."

The film tells the story of a retired CIA operative who embarks on a mission to make things right with his estranged daughter, a 30-something alcoholic facing separation from her own child.

It is being produced by Lenny O'Donnell, a Seattle native working out of Los Angeles. The production company responsible for the film is the Bellevue-based EKE Pictures.

So far, the cast includes David Rasche ("United 93," "Flags of Our Fathers") and Seattle actress Cynthia Geary ("Smoke Signals," "Northern Exposure").

The company is aiming for a film festival tour later this year before a national release.
