Council nixes garbage transfer station in Georgetown

P-I STAFF

The Seattle City Council gave unanimous approval Monday to a plan to cut the amount of trash tossed and increase recycling citywide.

The plan includes upgrades for city dumps -- but not the construction of a controversial new transfer station in the Georgetown neighborhood in South Seattle.

The idea is that if less waste is tossed out, the new dump won't be needed.

Garbage rates are expected to go up slightly under the plan.
